Exposing Some Surprising Tech Myths
Think your Mac computer is safe from viruses? How about the recycle bin? Believe that whenever you empty it you’ve forever deleted files?
Think your Mac computer is safe from viruses? How about the recycle bin? Believe that whenever you empty it you’ve forever deleted files?
And then there’s private browsing; assume you can surf to any Web site on your company computer and never find yourself in trouble? If you’ve answered “yes” to these questions, then you’ve fallen for some of the more common technology myths.
Not hacker-proof
Caroline Moss, writing for Business Insider, recently published a column exposing some of the more common technology myths. And one of the most prevalent? That Mac computers are somehow virus-proof. The reality is that Macs can get viruses. And now that these computers are becoming widely used you can expect an increase in the number of hackers targeting Apple’s operating system.
The recycle bin
You’d assume that moving a file to your computer’s recycle bin then emptying the bin would definitely permanently delete that file. You’d be wrong. Doing this frees up the space that your file had used up on your hard drive. But it still leaves fragments behind that, Moss writes, can be restored.
Less private than you think
Then there’s private browsing, which is less private than you might think. Just because you’ve told your browser to go incognito doesn’t mean the Web sites you visit are not recording details from your stay.
And whenever you download files when in private-browsing mode, these files will remain on your hard drive when you return to regular browsing mode.
