What is CMMC?

In 2017 the Department of Defense (DoD) enacted a rule that every Defense Industrial Base (DIB) contractor was now required to self-assess their readiness in terms of the NIST SP 800-171 guidelines and report their findings to the DoD. In an attempt to protect the nation’s secrets possessed by defense contractors, the DoD took these findings and introduced the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification.

CMMC is a maturity-based model broken out into three levels, with the vast majority of the Defense Industrial Base is expected to meet each level of compliance. The pathway to compliance looks like this:

  • Level 1 – Foundational: 17 practices, annual self-assessment
  • Level 2 – Advanced: 110 practices, assessments for critical national security information
  • Level 3 – Expert: 110+ practices, triennial government-led assessments
