Your Guide to the 2017 New York City AWS Summit
In just one week’s time, the Amazon Web Services community here in New York City will find itself coming together again for the annual AWS Summit. The AWS Summit is a free event designed to bring together the public cloud community, with the goal of cross-pollinating end-user and industry experience in the public cloud space.
Activities at the AWS Summit are designed for all comers: veteran AWS gurus, those just starting to think about how Public Cloud can help enable their business and from veteran enterprises to startups. Expect highly collaborative events which range from break-out sessions to workshops and hands-on labs.
While the AWS Summit spans just a single day, it’s jam-packed and important to plan for. While you may find yourself getting caught up in the buzz du jour, we’d like to provide a high-level guide of not-to-miss sessions.
Keynotes
As with every year, and just about every global summit, you can expect a stimulating keynote from AWS CTO Werner Vogels. You can expect a recap of progress made over the last 12 months, as well as some exciting guest speakers from a cross section of industry local to New York City. With attendance estimates in the 10,000-15,000 range, you can be sure to expect exciting new product and feature launches as well.
This year, it appears that AWS is focusing its summit series around both Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence. To that, be sure to stay and take in speeches from both Adrian Cockcroft, Vice President of Enterprise Cloud Strategy, and Dr. Matt Wood, General Manager of Artificial Intelligence.
Sessions
There are dozens of breakout sessions available to choose from. As you build your course agenda, pay especially close attention to the intendance audience for your selected topic. These tend to be highly interactive presentations; please take the opportunity to link up with your presenters and network as you start diving more deeply into a particular topic.
We wanted to take a moment to highlight just a few of those sessions:
- Transform your Business with VMware Cloud on AWS, an Integrated Hybrid Approach: VMware cloud on AWS brings the best of both worlds with VMware’s enterprise class software-defined data center technologies running on next-generation, bare-metal AWS infrastructure and delivered as a cloud service.
- Security @ (Cloud) Scale: Customers using AWS benefit from over 1,800 security and compliance controls built into the AWS platform and operations. We’ll take a look at several reference architectures for common workloads and highlight the innovative ways customers are using AWS to manage security more efficiently.
- Machine Learning in Capital Markets: Financial Services companies are using machine learning to reduce fraud, streamline processes, and improve their bottom line. AWS provides tools that help them easily use AI tools like MXNet and Tensor Flow to perform predictive analytics, clustering, and more advanced data analyses. In this session, you’ll hear how IHS Markit has used Machine Learning on AWS to help global banking institutions manage their commodities portfolios. You will also learn how the Amazon Machine Learning Service can take the hassle out of AI.
Security Jam
This year, AWS is hosting a New York City Security Jam! This is a half-day security focused “hackathon” style event that helps bring together teams interested in diving into a real-world cybersecurity challenge. These tasks will have varying degrees of difficulty and will challenge teams to identify “what happened” and to develop response and remediation countermeasures.
The AWS Summit App
Help get yourself organized for the day with the AWS NYC App. You can use this to organize and flag sessions you’re interested inn ahead of time. The app allows you to stay on top of everything from interesting sessions to connecting with speakers and planning your walk around the Expo Hall.
