Inventory Highlights Areas of Concern

The CDI Discovery Program uses the Cisco Discovery tool to perform an unobtrusive scan of your network and collect valuable data about networking software and hardware (the tool currently supports switches and routers). The application uses a variety of industry standard and Cisco proprietary mechanisms to discover the devices within a network, including the following:

• Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)
• Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
• CiscoWorks Auto Update Server (AUS) queries 

This information is analyzed to highlight potential areas of concern, such as out-of-date software and hardware, that CDI can help address. The Cisco Discovery tool creates a comprehensive report, along with a set of recommendations that enables the CDI services to work with your organization to increase reliability of your network. The Cisco Discovery tool:

• Identifies security vulnerabilities, alerts and areas of concern
• Flags inventory discrepancies, deployment inconsistencies and network modernization opportunities
• Assists with maintaining an accurate Cisco SMARTnet contract

This information is presented in the form of an Inventory Profile Report. The report includes the following information:

• A list of various Cisco IOS releases and specific hardware components that have passed the following milestones: End-of-Sale/End-of-Engineering/Last-Day-of-Support 
• A catalog of limited or general deployment status for Cisco IOS Software, Cisco Catalyst OS versions, and Cisco PIX OS
• Known security advisories
